A New Beginning ….. Again!

Last night I found my old poems and writings. I found my ideas formulated while doing a Diploma in Children’s Writing. Last night I decided I needed to write again. I will post some of the less horrendous poems from my school years, and my 30’s, and to add some current ones. I have had two periods in my life where I have struggled with depression and writing always seemed to help. This is the third “new beginning!” Suicide was considered at these occasions, but never acted on. As a Buddhist, I will not act on it, but many of my poems and musings do discuss Death.

I don’t care if anyone reads them, this process is about helping me heal. If I can find inspiration and healing then this blog has worked.

This is my first ever blog. To date I have been old-fashioned pen and paper. Forgive me for sharing my blundering with the world.

Starting again

It has been well over a year since I last wrote.

I have lived through a Category 5 Cyclone.

I have had to cope with minor damage to my property and dealing with insurance companies and builders.

Our boat sank – our business.

I had to find a “real” job.

I discovered I hate retail!

We found a new boat, and the stresses of starting the business again.

I went to a counsellor. I was in a bad state.

I have come through the other side and feel I can start writing again.

I feel like I can start again.

Without Enthusiasm

I am afraid to say
it is without enthusiasm
that I approach Xmas day.

It has become a shoppers dream,
bargins and deals galore,
a great marketing scheme.

Drive out and about at night,
Electricity wasted for competion with neighbours,
it is an extravagant sight.

“Oh bah humbug” you say,
“Think of the joy for children and families!”
but it’s gimme gimme gimme all day!

Lots of grog and candy and food,
feasting and playing and more,
but the waste at the end is so rude.

Without Enthusiasm

NB: I still enjoy the chance to dress up my puppy though!

I find it very galling,
being always brought to task,
for something you think I might have done,
I wish you would just ask.

I find it very grating,
you won’t ask me to my face,
you hide behind the texting,
big yellow chicken wheyface.

I find it so annoying,
how you like to be in control,
you emotionally blackmail me,
it eats me to my sole.

I find it so maddening,
you think I want to feud,
I just want to have a heart to heart,
lets talk about our mood.

You are so Irksome,
nearly all the time,
but it is such a waste,
when we are both in our prime.

I relish the good times,
and the bad.
I need both to see the value of life.

I relish my alone times,
and the times with friends.
I need both to keep my mind sane.

I relish being physically active,
and blobbing on the couch.
I need both to stay healthy.

I relish sunny hot days,
and the days of rain.
I need both to grow my plants.

Is the glass half full of water,
or half empty.
It is neither.

The glass is half full of water,
AND half full of air.
So it is completely full.

So is my life, that I Relish!

Today we had an Argument,
I am really not sure why.
Can you remember what started it?
I can’t, no matter how hard I try!

It got rather heated,
not nice things were said by both.
I am sorry we didn’t work it out,
but I hope it will lead to growth.

It’s exhausting when we work so hard,
10 days straight with no break.
Long, physical days in the heat,
It’s so hard to keep awake.

Please forgive me for what I said,
I for you I will do the same.
Another day of work tomorrow,
We have to keep up with the game.

It’s raining, oh heck,
it’s supposed to be the dry season.
Water plops onto my deck,
La Nina or El Nino, which on is the reason?

Working hard on the sea,
this weather makes me flop.
I crash after I eat tea,
onto the couch I Plop!

I’ve got a little list!

I’ve got a little list,
So nothing will be missed!
It helps me be in control,
It’s good for my soul.

My lists keep getting longer,
Will it make me stronger?
It’s all that I can do,
to stop me becoming blue.

I write them everywhere,
I really do not care;
paper, blackboard, ipad,
though the last is just a fad.

A list gives me order,
It’s like being a horder.
When I cross something off it,
My moral really profits.

It forces me into action,
By giving me some traction.
So nothing will be missed,
I’ve got a little list!

My first thought when I saw the title “The Poetry of List-Making” in this week’s discover challenges were the lyrics from the song “As some Day it May Happen” from Gilbert and Sullivan – The Mikado. The chorus being:
“He’s got ’em on the list — he’s got ’em on the list;
And they’ll none of ’em be missed — they’ll none of ’em be missed.”

The photo is of a painting I made for my mother. She loves butterflies, I love their freedom, yet the structure and order of the picture reminds me of my lists.

Leonardo da Vinci

A portrait of Leonardo that I sketched in High School.

Long white locks flow,
Beard and hair meld together,
Upper lip clean shaven,
Eyebrows like small peaks of a hat.

Lips pursed tight,
Corners down turned
Brow furrowed with deep wrinkles,
No twinkle of a smile in those eyes.

My portrait of a Renaissance Man,
Both words and sketch speak volumes,
His fantastic inventions, his art,
and his portrait of Mona Lisa.

Praise, why do I crave it?
Why do I seek it out?
Why do I need it?

A simple word, a simple smile,
It means so much to me,
Praise lifts my soul.

Praise is easy to give,
But rarely used wisely,
It can be so uplifting.

Just praise me once a day,
That’s all I ask of you,
Just find one thing, that’s all I need.

I don’t want to be pampered,
I want to deserve the praise,
But when I only hear negatives…I wilt away!
